21 Jump Street
The Good:
This flick is literally laugh out loud funny, it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite some time. The Bad:
It's hard to find negatives with this movie because it was truly awesome, but there were a few moments that moved a little slowly as they advanced the storyline. As we’ve said time and time again, we’re a huge fan of reboots. Not really. This is the worst type of reboot if you ask me. On the surface it seems like the only thing the original show and the movie have in common are their name. So, I just wasn’t that excited about watching this movie when I started to see previews popping up. It just didn’t look that funny to me, and the reboot factor had me irked from the get-go.
Lately however, I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about how funny this movie is. Talking to people whose opinions I trust have told me how funny it is and I really do like Jonah Hill so finally I had to see for myself. I listened to Jonah Hill on Howard Stern about a month ago and he was just raving about the movie and how he’s been working on it for the past 5 years or so. When a writer/actor talks about their movie and hypes it up so much it’s hard to tell whether they’re being genuine, or if they’re trying to sell tickets. More often than not their just trying to slang tickets to their shitty project.
After watching this movie, damn. I’m pissed that I didn’t see it earlier. In fact, if I had seen it earlier I might have seen it again by now. It’s that good. It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve seen a comedy that was this funny. Throughout about three quarters of this movie, you’re laughing your fucking ass off.
Basically, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play pretty terrible cops that get assigned to bicycle duty in the park where they manage to make absolutely zero arrests. When they finally get their chance to arrest a member of a bicycle gang for possession of coke, the chargers end up getting dropped because Channing Tatum’s character not only didn’t read the suspect his Miranda Rights, but he didn’t even know them!
So the officers get assigned to a special undercover project for immature, young-looking officers, which is where the tie-in to 21 Jump Street comes in. Hill and Tatum are sent to a high school to break up a new designer drug ring which is where the movie goes from funny to fucking hilarious. We’re not just talking laugh out loud funny, there were a couple of times during the movie that I actually keeled over from laughing so hard.
Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise make GREAT cameos that do an excellent job of tying the two generations together. So as poor as the premise of this reboot seemed, they actually did a great job of pulling it off as well as poking fun at themselves for not being able to come up with an original concept.
I don’t want to spoil the movie by giving away much of the story or sharing the actual jokes from the movie but I have to say that 21 Jump Street is an absolute must-see. My friends and I walked out of the theater still laughing our asses off and quoting some of our favorite lines of which there were too many to remember. If you want a good laugh, stop whatever menial task you’re engaged in now, and go catch 21 Jump Street. You won’t regret it.
