Britney Spears – Lifetime Achievement Award! Seriously?

Allow me to start off with the customary, ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME???  I feel like this should be part of Norm McDonald’s, “Wait, What?” bit.  Britney Spears won a lifetime achievement award, wait… what?  First and foremost, this has nothing to do with Britney Spears as a performer, though I’m no fan of her music this isn’t what I’m talking about.  Britney Spears is TWENTY NINE years old!!!

Aren’t lifetime achievement awards something to give people like Madonna, or Michael Jackson (well, that was an easy one the award is actually named after him).  But seriously, was there no one else that MTV could have given this award to?  Britney is still very much an active artist, I mean fuck… she won Best Pop Video THIS YEAR!!!  I think the old dog’s got some tricks left in her…

So maybe in like 20 years when Britney is “old” and her career is really over we can give her a double lifetime achievement award?

You hit the target dead on with this one. A 29 year old music artist certianly does not deserve a lifetime achievement award. Playing devils advocate however, this could be MTV’s way of telling Brittany Spears to stop while she’s ahead. Regardless the time way way off. I can think of 3 musical acts that deserve it much more than Brittany Spears. In no particular order of preference…

    1. Dr. Dre
    2. Red Hot Chili Peppers (debatable becuase the just came out with new album..but they have been rocking out for almost 25 years! I mean cmon.. flea was in Back to the Future!)
    3. Madonna

These people are much more worthy than Brittany Spears.

Yeah Will! Chili Peppers baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Flea was also in The Big Lebowski, and Anthony Keidis got shot in the foot in Point Break. They created psychedelic sex funk and have been jamming since the 80′s. I mean, come on~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO. Nope, this CANNOT be real. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

I almost fell out of my chair when reading this. Of course, I discovered this news first on Slangstrong.com. With my busy weekend, I did not have the chance to hear about this until Monday morning at work.

How on earth can this even be possible? I can understand a Comeback Performer award or something of that nature, but a Lifetime Achievement Award???!!!

    She’s too young
She doesn’t have the resume yet
She’s gone crazy, more than once
She’s shaved her head for no reason
    She dated Kevin Federline…..

All reasons why her return to fame should earn her some sort of Improvement award, not an Achievement award. Not yet at least. You can’t deny her box office success. She makes more money than most can comprehend, and continues to dominate record sales while selling out arenas. But did they just have to give this to anyone, and pulled her name out of a hat? I don’t get it.

So I stared at my computer screen for a solid 8 minutes trying to organize my thoughts regarding this issue. I finally had a opinion (insert excitement), and you know what? I’m not as mad as everyone else.

First and foremost- RHCP would have been a great pick, but if Frusciante can’t be there then who cares (Im biased of course, because that man is a living legend). Madonna and Michael would have too cliche. I mean how many times do we have to honor (honour if you’re Canadian) the same people.

MTV has never used the VMAs to honor the perfect candidate. I mean Ron Howard’s goofy brother got a lifetime achievement award for christ’s sake. This isn’t the grammys people, let’s not take ourselves too seriously. That is why I’m not totally against the Britney nod. Lets look at the facts shall we.

      Britney’s accomplishments (according to wikipedia)
-Has won a grammy (nominated 8 times), multiple billboard awards, and multiple MTV awards
-Has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, 5th all-time for female artists
-Spears was HUGE when teeny boppers ruled MTV.
-She was the voice of an era, albeit a mediocre one.

Britney Spears, love her or hate her, was/is a pop icon. Sorry that’s where music went for a period, but deal with it. I’m no Britney fan, but as someone on YouTube once said…leave Britney alone!

I’m not questioning Britney’s merits as a performer, there’s no doubt about her accomplishments whether you like her music or not. What I AM questioning is why MTV as a network is handing out LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT awards to people who haven’t had their 30th birthday yet.

Not to mention, her career isn’t OVER yet. She just won Best Pop Video at the VMA’s (the very award show that gave her said Lifetime Achievement Award), THIS YEAR!!!

So I’m not arguing that she didn’t deserve an award based on her merits, I’m saying that she didn’t deserve the award because of what it IS. It’s a LIFETIME Achievement Award, give it to someone in the twilight of their career (or someone whose career is already long passed) and had the same profound effect on the music industry. Believe me, there’s enough qualified people out there that we don’t need to start handing these awards out to twenty-somethings.

Yes, but most performers do not start their careers at age 16. If she had broken through later in life, say at a reasonable 25 years old, she would be turning 40 right about now. Frankly, I think Britney’s best days are well behind her and she will not have the longevity of some other female artists. Plus she can’t act so that door has closed. I think MTV believes this to be true as well and decided now was the right time to give her this award.
