Brock is Back!!
First I just have to say how excited I am to hear about this, for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that there have been several reports floating around saying that Brock’s career was over due to the digestive disease known as diverticulitis. The second reason this fight is going to be so fucking sick is because it’s Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem!!! These guys are going to absolutely beat the shit out of each other.
Brock is an absolute beast but the question with this fight is what version of Brock are we going to see come December 30th when these two heavyweights square off. Are we going to see the Brock that absolutely man-handled Frank Mir in their 2nd fight (after Mir caught Brock in a kneebar in their first fight) or a Brock that’s decimated by injuries and just isn’t quite the same. I hope that Brock is back and that he’s as bad as ever but I’m just not sure.
Then, on the other hand you have Alistair Overeem who vacated his Strikeforce Heavyweight Title when he was released by the company recently, only to be picked up by the UFC (who happen to own Strikeforce). Overeem is a monster who has been coming into his own having not lost a fight now since 2007. On paper, Alistair looks pretty good with an overall record of 35-11 with 1 no contest. However, this is where the debate really starts. I’ve had this conversation with many of my friends and I just don’t think Strikeforce stacks up to the UFC. Sure, Strikeforce has some good fighters, but the caliber of the competition just isn’t the same as what the UFC has to offer.
Alistair Overeem’s last few fights haven’t been against the toughest competition. Brett Rogers has lost 3 of his last 4 fights. Todd Duffee is… well who the fuck is Todd Duffee other than someone who the average MMA fan hasn’t even heard of? Then you have Fabricio Werdum which was one of Alistair Overeem’s bigger wins but my points remains, the competition in Strikeforce just isn’t the same as the UFC.
Brock Lesnar was fighting straight up MMA legends! Keep in mind that Brock was learning how to be an MMA fighter as he went. Frank Mir may have been fucking with Brock Lesnar when he told him that he was going to use moves on him that he had never heard of, but it was true!! Until he got sick, Brock was improving with each and every fight. Brock’s relative inexperience combined with the fact that he just got half his colon surgically removed may give Alistair all the advantage he needs.
If Brock shows up and looks like the Brock Lesnar that ran through Frank Mir and Shane Carwin, then I think he will absolutely brutalize Alistair Overeem. But Brock is fresh off of a knockout loss to Cain Velasquez, and he had surgery to remove 12 inches of his colon. The knockout loss alone is enough to change the trajectory of his career, but I think that combined with the surgery might be too much for Brock.
Regardless of the ultimate outcome, this will be a great fight to watch. The atmosphere is going to be electric, and these two gorillas will battle it out in the Octagon and nobody will be disappointed. Don’t look for a decision in this fight, if it goes to the 3rd round I’ll be amazed.
